About the Role

The role of a Controller involves providing accounting support to the organization. This position will play a critical role in maintaining accurate financial records, ensuring compliance with accounting principles and regulations, and providing financial information and analysis to support decision-making. The Controller will lead a team of accounting professionals and collaborate with various departments to ensure the organization's financial stability and transparency.

How You'll Have an Impact

The applicant hired as our Controller will:

  • Manage and oversee month-end and end-of-year general ledger reconciliation.
  • Manage and oversee billing, cash receipts, and revenue recognition.
  • Manage and oversee accounts payable processing.

Financial Accounting and Reporting:

  • Manage and supervise the day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, and payroll.
  • Ensures timely and accurate recording of financial transactions in compliance with accounting principles and internal policies.
  • Prepares monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements.
  • Conducts financial analysis to identify trends, variances, and areas for improvement.
  • Generates accurate and comprehensive financial reports for management, board members, and external stakeholders.

Budgeting and Forecasting:

  • Assists in the development of the annual budget in collaboration with department heads and executive leadership.
  • Monitors budget performance, analyzes variances, and provides regular reports to management.
  • Works closely with program managers to ensure program budgets are aligned with strategic objectives.
  • Assists in the preparation of financial forecasts and projections to support organizational planning and decision-making.

Internal Controls and Compliance:

  • Establishes and maintains effective internal control procedures to safeguard assets and ensure the accuracy of financial records.
  • Oversees the reconciliation of bank accounts and ensures proper documentation and approval for financial transactions.
  • Ensures compliance with nonprofit accounting standards, tax regulations, and reporting requirements.
  • Supports the annual audit process and coordinates with auditors to address any findings or recommendations.
  • Stays updated on changes in accounting regulations and implements necessary adjustments to accounting practices.

Grant Management:

  • Coordinates the financial aspects of grant applications, including budget development, compliance with funding requirements, and financial reporting.
  • Monitors grant expenditures and budgets and ensures accurate tracking and reporting of funds.
  • Collaborates with program managers and grant administrators to ensure proper financial management of grants.

Team Management and Development:

  • Leads and supervises a team of accounting professionals, providing guidance, training, and professional development opportunities.
  • Fosters a positive and collaborative work environment, promoting teamwork and effective communication within the accounting department and across the organization.
  • Conducts performance evaluations, sets goals, and provides feedback to team members.
  • Continuously assess and improve accounting processes, systems, and controls to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
  • Works collaboratively in a team environment with a spirit of cooperation.
  • Directly supervises employees in accounting. Carries out supervisory responsibilities following the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints; and resolving problems.

What We Are Looking For

  • Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university in accounting, finance, or a related field (master's degree or equivalent preferred)
  • Three to five years of related experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience working in accounting, preferably in the nonprofit sector.
  • Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles, financial regulations, and compliance requirements.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
  • Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to the prescribed style and format.
  • Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide into all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to use various applications, including databases, spreadsheets, report writing, project management, graphics, word processing, presentation creation/editing, communicating by e-mail, and using scheduling software. Experience with Excel, Word, and Sage Intaact .
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Other Requirements:

  • Certificated Public Accountant (CPA) license or Certified Management Accountant (CMA) is preferred.
  • Ability to travel out of town to attend workshops or training.
  • Applicants must be able to work a variety of hours, including occasional evenings and weekends.
  • Applicants must have access to reliable transportation for work-related duties.
  • Applicants must be able to successfully pass background checks.

Salary Range: $90,000- $100,000 (annually). Salary commensurate with experience.

Physical Requirements:

  • The employee may be required to sit for extended periods.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision and distance vision.
  • Hybrid/remote work environment, though frequent in-person meetings will be required.

Important Details

Supervisor: Director of Finance

Status: 1.00 Full-Time (40 hours/week)

Location: Most of the work performed by this position can be accomplished in a hybrid/remote work environment, though frequent in-person meetings will be required. There are times that work requires in-person, onsite activities. On-site work is located at EPHC's offices in Gresham, OR. Job duties may require occasional travel and evening and weekend work, depending on project deadlines.
